The term 'cloud' first started being used in the 1990s and started becoming popular in the 2000s and 2010s, when Amazon, Google, Microsoft, and Apple first began utilizing cloud-based software and applications.
Now in simple terms, the cloud is a server that is filled with tons of data. Companies then use this server and build web-based or software-based applications that connect to it, so that everything is stored online. This is a huge benefit, since space on a computer hard drive won't be needed since it is saved remotely, and access to the data will be available anywhere, if there is an internet connection.
Using a cloud based server is also very cost-effective as it makes it easier to organize all data and information, which helps save time and money when it comes to storage space and access.

To show the comparison of cloud-based versus desktop (non-cloud based), let's utilize two different software that Scribble Software offers. Scribble offers MarinaOffice, which is completely desktop based, and MARINAGO Office, which is completely web/cloud based.
