Rate Structures in the Marina Industry

The strategic price you set for your offering must not only attract buyers in large numbers but also help you to retain them. – W. Chan Kim

In the marina industry, marinas use rate structures to calculate space pricing. Depending on the marina's business model, these rate structures can be very simple or complex.

What are some of the rating structures in the marina industry? How can you and your staff implement and automate your rate pricing structure?

Rating structures vary based on the amenities offered, the marina's location, the size of the vessels, the time of year, and other variables.

Marinas may offer time-based space rentals for:

Transient rates bill for short stays, typically by the day.

Recurring rates bill the customer for a set time frame, such as monthly, quarterly, semi-annual, and annual.

Seasonal rates bill the customer for a marina's particular seasonal schedule. Two examples of seasonal rates are a summer seasonal rate versus a winter seasonal rate. When marinas are only open for a specific time of year, they typically use seasonal rates.

Some of the most common rate structures are:

Transient Rates

The per-foot length of the vessel typically prices temporary rates. This pricing structure may include price increases for specific holidays or special events.

Non-Transient Rates

Many variables determine the non-transient rate structure, including a fixed rate per foot or minimum length of the rental space.

Additional fees may be added to the space rental rate structure. The rates can have extra costs for electricity, water, internet, lockers, parking, etc.

Other variables include "where" the vessels are stored at your marina. These include:

Drystack storage – All marinas do not offer this option.

Water slip – from transients to year-round.

Boat lifts – which are rare but remarkable for saltwater storage options to prevent damage to your vessels.

Want to increase the price for a particular rate you are using? It's easy! Create a scheduled price change.
